These classic Southern favorites are hardy, friendly, and full of charm.  Known for their excellent egg-laying and easygoing temperament, Rhode Island Reds make a wonderful addition to any backyard flock. With proper care, they’ll thrive and bring plenty of farm-fresh eggs to your table.

• Egg color: Medium to dark brown

• Egg size: Large (some hens lay extra-large as they mature)

• Production: About 250–300 eggs per year — very reliable layers

• Age they start laying: Around 18–22 weeks

• Shell quality: Strong shells, great for selling or hatching

• Temperament tie-in: Calm, hardy hens = consistent laying even in cooler weather

They’re one of the best all-around breeds if you want lots of brown eggs with minimal fuss.
