Ayam Cemani

An Ayam Cemani is basically the goth royalty of the chicken world 🖤🐔

It’s a rare chicken breed from Indonesia that’s famous for being almost completely black—and I mean everything:

• Feathers

• Skin

• Beak

• Comb & wattles

• Legs & feet

• Even the bones and internal organs

That all-black look comes from a genetic condition called fibromelanosis, which causes extreme pigmentation.

A few other quick facts:

• Egg color: Cream to light tan (not black—surprise!)

• Temperament: Calm but alert, can be a little shy

• Egg production: Low to moderate (they’re more ornamental than productive)

• Cold hardiness: Not great—best in warmer climates

• Value: Very expensive compared to most chickens

In their native culture, they’re often surrounded by myths and spiritual beliefs, and historically they were used in ceremonies rather than just for eggs or meat.
